2012 CanAm Regatta – Stowe, VT

2012 S1M CanAm Challenge Regatta Results —
15 Races (30 Heats); 2 Throw Outs

By Charlie Berry

The fourth annual CanAm Challenge Regatta was held in Stowe, VT on August 4th &5th. This event is continuing its popularity: we had 10 boats in the inaugural year of 2009, and 22 boats this year. We had 11 boats from Canada (with the largest contingent from the Halifax, NS club), and 11 from the USA.

George Dean and Bob Letwenski, our RD’s, dealt with light winds on Saturday, but
managed to keep the pace moving right along. We ran two-fleet racing under the
Odd/Even system. This system is consistent with the theme of the regatta: “A
Friendly Cross-Border Rivalry”. It is essentially a random selection process, which
had the top sailors mixing it up with the newer sailors. The racing was based on
individual performance – no team racing allowed. However, the individual scores
were then applied to the Team scoring, with the top 5 scores from each country
applied to the Team results for that race. In this manner, any sailor could help out his
or her team by scoring in the top 5 for the team in any given race.
Eight races (16 heats) were run on Saturday, with 1 throw-out allowed. Bruce
Nourjian ended the day with 11 points, closely followed by Jim Goddard and Paul
Fixx, each with 16 points. The U.S. group held a solid lead in the team scoring at the
end of the day with 95 points versus 180 points for Team Canada.
Sunday treated the group to an 8 to 12 mph southerly breeze, with stronger gusts. The
RC managed to run 7 races (14 heats) by 1pm. Bruce continued to build upon his
lead, winning four of the races and throwing out a 3
rd. He ended the regatta with 19
pts, followed by Jim Goddard (29 pts), Charlie Berry (33 pts), Boots Boutilier (39
pts), and George Townsend (40 pts) rounding out the top 5. The Team Award went
to the USA group for the fourth straight year. The chant from Team Canada: “Wait
‘til next year!” The camaraderie both on and off the water said that there will, indeed,
be a next year.
The Corinthian spirit of this regatta was in full display throughout the weekend. At
registration, all competitors were given T-shirts with dueling Canadian and USA
boats on the back with a “U.S. Eh?” banner. Each team had various caps, hats, shirts
and bandanas showing its respective patriotism. Following a buffet dinner, there was
much banter followed with singing of Canadian and USA national anthems and sea
shanties, led by Bob “Boots” Boutilier and Bruce Nourjian.
There is no question that the “friendly cross-border rivalry” is now a tradition. There
is strong support to hold the CanAm Challenge next year, again at Stowe. The 2013
date will be determined and promoted well in advance to avoid as many conflicts as
possible and to build support from other U.S. and Canadian clubs.

2012 Green Mountain Regatta – Stowe, VT

2012 EC12 Green Mountain Regatta
By: Charlie Berry

Stowe Yacht Club and The Commodores Inn held this annual event on the
pond behind the Inn, in Stowe, Vermont. The regatta is part of the New England Cup
Championship Series. There were 20 competitors, covering a broad geographic area
in addition to the New England area, including Florida, Wisconsin, Illinois and, for
the first time, Nova Scotia.
Conditions were as challenging as they were variable. We did have wind, but
it never established a consistent direction. Toss in a fairly steady rain for Saturday
afternoon, followed by some welcome sunshine on Sunday, and you have typical
New England springtime weather!
With 20 boats, we elected to use the EORS two-fleet system, moving four
boats up and down. We modified the seeding race process by using the new Class
Ranking System to set up the initial heats, and then used the first race to adjust the
seeding. This race did not count in the scoring.
Prior to Saturday’s Skippers Meeting, Doc Greer brought out the champagne
bottle to christen his brand new boat. The brand of champagne happened to be
Suzan’s absolute favorite. Suzan was one of the Race Scorers. Coincidence? Also of
note, we had three skippers who were racing in their first EC12 regatta: George
Townsend (Stowe), Jim Goddard and Boots Boutillier (both hailing from Nova
Scotia).
Saturday’s races were held in light-to-moderate southerly breezes. Al Dion,
with his new Chuck Luscomb built boat, dominated the day. Bruce Nourjian held 2nd
place, 10 points behind Dion. Dave Brawner had uncharacteristic equipment
problems, taking him out of two races. He still managed to hold onto third, one point
behind Nourjian.
At the Saturday evening dinner, we held a “rigged raffle” set up by Dave
Brawner. We had a “set of Danny Thomas sails” to raffle off, and had 20 names in a
hat. The set up was this: all the names in the hat were “Nick Montgu”, and the sails
were for a Santa Barbara, not an EC12. Dave has been secretly building a Santa
Barbara for Nick, and a group of East Coast guys are heading out to San Diego this
summer to race their brand new Santa Barbara’s. Nick will be joining this group,
willing or not!
On Sunday, Brawner put on a come-back clinic, winning four of the six races
and taking over a solid lead for the regatta. Dion, though, was hanging tough until
the fifth race of the day, where he was over the line early. He never recovered in that
race, and remained in the B Fleet for the final race. That sealed the deal for Brawner.
Nonetheless, Al Dion knows he has a hot boat. Jim Goddard, racing in his first
EC12 regatta, had major equipment failure early Sunday. But he has a new boat that
was delivered to him in Stowe by Dave Brawner – watch out for him in the future.

2011 HAMYC Commodores Regatta

2011 Commodores Regatta
Heckman’s Island, Nova Scotia
September 11, 2011

The sun shone brightly and the waters sparkled as we launched fourteen 1 Meter Solings at Heckman’s Island. We had a practice race, followed by a skippers meeting at 10:45am. The winds were light out of the northwest, and oscillating from the southwest on occasions which proved to be both interesting and challenging. By 12:30pm, we had completed 5 races, all were hotly contested and especially exciting at the start as each in the fleet vied for the best position at the windward pin.

Lunch consisted of an assortment of mini ciabatta sandwiches (deviled curry egg / chicken salad / tuna & cheese Dijon), along with grape tomatoes, dill pickles, Canadian cheddar, turkey Kobassa turkey roll and baked potato chips. We enjoyed a chilled fruit punch (laced with Tera Beata Cranberry juice) as well as a handsomely decorated celebration “Commodore’s Regatta” double layer cake.

After lunch, the wind steadied from the southwest and freshened to 20ks, with puffs to 30k.. Doc made a brilliant charge, finishing with three bullets; however Ben grabbed two firsts to go with his two in the morning. Boots had 5 races where he finished in the top three, including one win; however experienced a number of “setbacks” with other yachts especially at the approach of the leeward buoys. Bob.comm also had 5 finishes in the top 3, including a win; however faded during the last 2 races – clearly he was under the influence of cake!. A total of 10 races were completed, and each of us dropped the two lowest, hence our best 8 races registered.
