Soling 1M Sunday July 31-22

It was an interesting day with only five boats on hand because of the heat. The breeze did nothing to cool down the participants or the action. After five races we called it for the day after Brian McDonah lost his keel and Boots packed it in because of the heat.

We participated in this event on a course laid out in front of the LYC alongside the members of the Martin’s River Sailing Club. On our course we sailed our Soling 1m’s while a mixed group took part on the inner course. While not everyone was able to make the trip, we had a great turnout.
The wind cooperated with a stiff breeze that broke some rigging and at least one mast, along with a nice chop we don’t see sailing on Sullivan’s Pond. Luckily the LYC had a crash boat on hand with Commodore Andreas Josenhans at the controls. Andreas is a former Canadian Olympian in the Soling class in 1976, a two time world champion the in the Soling class and a member of several America’s Cup campaigns.
There were lot’s of spectators and a good time was had by all, hopefully we will have a chance to sail at LYC again in the future.

This day was a little different with Jim and Boots running four seeding races with no drop races to set the field for some exciting short course match racing. We also experimented with a longer course making the starting line at one end of the pond and the weather mark at the other. This made the first beat longer and reduced the need for offsets.
