Sunday May 3, 2015 Season Start

Ahoy!
8 skippers  crossed the starting line Sunday past and were greeted by favourable building southwest winds that show the sure sign summer is just around the corner. It was a fun day, tuning our yachts as well as catching up on the news with our fellow sailors. We were delighted to welcome new member Vern, with his boat # 777, freshly repurchased from the US – Boots thought he may have seen it at Stowe in the distant past?
We will have 1 M Soling sailing this Thursday evening and a great 2 day club opening this weekend – check the schedule. ECs I believe are this evening. Hats off to those who set the buoys this year; their placement is excellent – the new location for the starting line allows for a longer first leg which should reduce the  &*&*(*&#$*+ at the weather mark.
Such fun, it’s all good!
Fairwinds!

Pond is Ice Free

I drove by the pond today and the ice is gone!
However, the snow along the edges remains in place.
A few more days of warm weather or even some rain will see the end of that.

We can look forward to sailing this weekend if all goes well!

Playing with boats

The ice on the pond will be gone this weekend if the weather stays mild and foggy.

We did manage to spend some time playing with boats and got my EC-12 measurements done. If the elections allow me to get to Stowe, Tim Stone will do the float test and I will be official.

Now just waiting for the weather to improve!

There are Fools and then there are Fools

OK,

We are foolish enough to sail in crazy weather but this year even our level of crazy is not enough. The pond is still frozen over and the city has cleared the access by piling all the snow next to the pond.

The April Day Fools event will be rescheduled when the ice leaves the pond and we can gain access to place the marks.

Pond March 30-15This photo taken recently shows the state of affairs. There is some open water and it will not take long to melt. Remain optimistic!

Remembering Bill Traill

billOur Friend and sailing colleague Bill Traill died suddenly at home on March 1, 2015. Bill had been a member of the HAMYC for a few years and he became a sailor, able to get around the course and compete.

He will be sorely missed for his humour, optimism and joy for getting out on the pond with his friends.

2015 Annual General Meeting

We had an excellent AGM which was well-attended considering that a lot of our members are basking in warmer climes.  A number of new initiatives were brought forward which should make for an even better sailing season this year.  Paul will be writing up the minutes but until they are ready here is a peek at some of the highlights:
  • More Formal Race Cancellation Policy  (decision posted to WebPage/Twitter/FaceBook before 0900 on day in question)
  • Formation of Committee for Club Promotion  (promotion of club social aspects / acquisition of new members)
  • Proactive Scheduling of End-of-Season Events  (Separate Awards Banquet and AGM scheduled to occur before departure of snowbirds)
  • Line/Mark Judge  (Appointment of ad-hoc judge from the fleet for regular sailing days. Provision of dedicated judge for Major Club Regattas)
